Chronicles of a Lawyer, a Banker and a …

This blog is a chronicles of my life, travels and experiences, including reviews of my many interests.

Ever Wished That Calvin and Hobbes Creator Bill Watterson Would Return to the Comics Page? Well, He Just Did.

Reblogging this because Calvin & Hobbes was such a great influence and Bill Watterson was and still is so amazing as a cartoonist

I'm Too Stupid to Travel

Bill Watterson is the Bigfoot of cartooning.

He is legendary. He is reclusive. And like Bigfoot, there is really only one photo of him in existence.

Few in the cartooning world have ever spoken to him. Even fewer have ever met him.

In fact, legend has it that when Steven Spielberg called to see if he wanted to make a movie, Bill wouldn’t even take the call.

So it was with little hope of success that I set out to try and meet him last April.

I was traveling through Cleveland on a book tour, and I knew that he lived somewhere in the area. I also knew that he was working with Washington Post cartoonist Nick Galifianakis on a book about Cul de Sac cartoonist Richard Thompson’s art.

So I took a shot and wrote to Nick. And Nick in turn wrote to Watterson.

And the meeting…

The disgusting french association Cause Animale Nord robs and steals a dog from the homeless

There are cases when my faith in humanity is utterly destroyed. This is unfortunately one such case. It is very enraging and extremely upsetting to see such an act done in this world. Faith in humanity utterly lost!

Three workers from the french association Cause Animale Nord were filmed attacking and stealing a homeless man’s dog in France, the man’s wailing and the dog’s terrified yappings are just heartbreaking

Warning this video is just heartbreaking. Continue reading “The disgusting french association Cause Animale Nord robs and steals a dog from the homeless”

Focusing in on Singapore GE2015

So on Friday 11 Sept 15, Singapore had its 13th general elections. If you have any Singaporean friends on Facebook, it would very apparent that the Singapore elections are coming, many Singaporeans suddenly becomes a political pundit.

The reason for this? The elections in Singapore tend to be snap elections, called suddenly and with a very short period of campaigning. On 24 Jul, the electoral boundaries were drawn and the number of seats per location were allocated. During the month of August, the different parties started introducing their candidates and where they were contesting as well as their party manifestos. The Parliament was dissolved on 25 August 2015 and the candidates were nominated on 1 September 2015. Election rallies were only allowed from 2 September to 9 September, 10 September is “cooling off day” a day when none of the parties or the candidates are allowed to campaign. (I too took a “cooling off day” one day after the elections, 12 Sep before posting this!) So it is only for this short period when election fervor hits the island city and everyone starts revealing their political inclinations on Facebook. Malaysia Merdeka Day & Bersih 4.0

Today is Malaysia’s national day. I posted about Singapore’s national day in my previous post so today I shall post about Malaysia’s national day. Technically Malaysia celebrates 2 national days. Merdeka day which is the day that peninsular Malaysia obtained its independence from the British in 1957. This “country” was known as the Federation of Malaya, or simply Malaya, made up of the 11 states on the peninsular. Later on the 6th anniversary of Merdeka day in 1961, the Federation of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore were to form into a new country, the Federation of Malaysia. This was postponed to 16 September due to Indonesia and Philippines opposing the Federation.  Since then Malaysia Day is celebrated on 16 September 1961.

Hence the 2 national days, one for independence from British rule and one for the formation of Malaysia with North Boreno (now know as Sabah) and Sarawak. Singapore was kicked out of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 and is the only country in the world to obtain independence against their will. Continue reading “Malaysia Merdeka Day & Bersih 4.0”
